Google Art Project UK Accessibility Laws & Alt Tags

Google have recently released a really cool thing!

Google Art Project

Google Art Project to my mind is the second brilliant thing Google have done.

The first being Matt Cutts Safe Search and now the second cool thing from the Google Camp “Google Art Project”!

I have to wonder though just how Google intend to comply with the UK’s Accessibility Laws.

Accessibility Laws in the UK basically mean that to be inclusive “Alt Tags” should be written so the blind can ”get a picture” of the image content in images.

What this means is “Alt Tags” must be written in a descriptive way that then includes those unable to see the visual representation.

So we could say it is so the blind can see. Not a great explantion as that is quite rude in it’s self and rather patronising but you get the idea Yes?

I mean that descriptively written “Alt tags” at least go some way to provide “Accessibility” to those unable to see the art work in pictures.

What I would like to know though is how Google are going to comply with UK Accessibility Laws for “Google Art Project”?

I know from first hand experience the amount of extra work involved trying to comply with the UK Accessibility Laws as all of my pages built outside of WordPress using mostly Twitter Bootstrap have “Alt tags” specifically written with the blind in mind.

I have not yet been able to reproduce this in the WidgetTed Widgets for WordPress we have designed but we will do as it is only right and irrelevant of whether it is law or not it feels right to me to write “Alt tags” this way to include the blind in what is in effect a world of art based around my cartoons.

I must for a clear conscience include the blind and I do not need UK Laws to tell me to do this I do this because I feel it is right to do so.

So what I am wondering is how Google are going to comply with UK Accessibility Laws for the Google Art Project?

Anyone any ideas at all?

It is a huge undertaking to comply with these Accessibility Laws but IMHO it is only right to do so. I don’t think there are many taking the time to do this as I have not found any “Alt Tags” that truly describe pictures so the blind can get a good idea of the content other than on my own WACICO sites that I wrote myself.

It seem peoples ideas of “one web” are more about mobile friendly things than any Accessibility things that make things inclusive.

I get why as it is purely money driven but it is also highly discriminatory.

I will of course be in a very small percentage to be considering such things but what are Google going to do to address the Accessibility issues involved with Google Art Project is what I would like to know as perhaps it would be handy to find out there approach so I can learn from it for my own WACICO & Double T Ted’s things as they must be Accessible to the blind IMHO as that is only right and good.

What are your thoughts on such Accessibility issues and Google Art Project?

Oh and WTG Google on an admirable project as the “Google Art Project” is brilliant from what I have seen thus far!

Alt Tag SEO

When it comes to accessibility do you write “Alt Tags” for the blind?

I decided that in order to be accessible my cartoon displays must have “Alt Tags” on images that are written as though they are descriptions in order to give blind people as best a picture of what a picture is about in word form.

Now this takes some work I can tell you. I have sadly as yet not got the WordPress based cartoon displays I have in place with ”Alt Tags for the Blind” as yet but all of the twitter bootstrap pages I have put online have very descriptive alt tags specifially with the idea that a blind person can get a good idea of what a carton plate or frame contains and so they can enjoy the cartoons as much as those who can see them do.

Now as I say it is a very time consuming practice. However it is only fair that I do this IMHO and I have attempted to address this aspect of accessibility before looking at how to address the accessibility issues concerned with mobiles.

Obviously in the short term I have to take the time to write these alts tags and this is not exactly what you can call an attitude towards accessibility others seem all that concrened with much at all.

But as I am taking the time to write alt tags for the blind I was wondering what others do in this regard and what other people think of writing alt tags with the idea that people who cannot see them (the pictures) can at least enjoy a description of them and so have access that is denied by most others in this regard?

It is obviously quite difficult to really do this properly but I can at least say I did do as best as I could given the amount of time it takes.

My thinking is along the lines of

What if Stevie Wonder found my things would they in any way give him as much as the things he gave me?

The naswer is no way man fallig well short tbh

however

Did you even take the time to think of such things when you went rushing on in declaring what a great SEO you are if you are an SEO reading this?

I might add I do not expect to be very popular in the SEO World. I don’t think SEO People are going to like me very much when the year 2013 (I might be able to employ some by then LOL) gets here as there is not much room on page 1 if you get my drift?
